Race day nutrition

Post  Rob on Sat Mar 28, 2009 3:09 am

Hi

Last year I took some gel on the route with me - some Lucozade stuff. Quite frankly it was over sweet and left a bitter after taste in your mouth.

On my long run last weekend I tried something new - GO gel and some block shots. The gel is a lot less gooey - imagine eating jelly as a child and slooshing it around in your mouth until it turned to a liquid - that is what it is like. Much nicer than the Lucozade stuff. The blocks are easy to chew and swallow - easier than jelly babies.

My marathon race day plan now is to carry a couple of gels and a pack of the blocks from the start and get through them by 17 miles - then pick up another batch from the Runners world supply dump!

BTW if anyone wants to register for the RW supporters thing I would get on to the forum sooner rather than later.

I am going to try the gels during the Reading half tomorrow and the blocks too if I can get some pre-race. I'll let you know more about how I get on with them once I am round...

Thanks Rob - have put myself on the runners world list. Did you use this last year - how do you get the gels etc. to them - does everyone meet before the race?

Have been toying with the idea of gels, really didn't think I was going to give them a go but have reverted to only using lucozade sport whilst running (plus water of course) and I am not sure it is enough to replenish plus as it is syrupy it is very much a little and often. The other day I bought some powdered stuff (sis go electorlyte) to add to water (as a replacement for the Lucozade sport), so still a drink as opposed to gel/block. Will be trying it out at Reading. So similarly will keep people posted.

RW Supporters / pit stop

Post  Rob on Sat Mar 28, 2009 11:09 am

Hi

You can drop the stuff you want to be passed over at the Expo - go to the RW stand and leave your stuff in a bag marked with your runners number and they will arrange for it to get to the place on the day.

See you tomorrow!

Torqing gels

Post  JSIMMONDS on Wed Apr 01, 2009 6:41 am

I've bought the "torq" variety of gels. Black cherry yoghurt flavour tastes like a cross between yoghurt and Big Mac relish - very weird! Strangely nice though (until you are on your 4th one when it gets sickening!).
Not too gooey though, and you don't need water with them.
